U. C Berkeley Stereotypes
U.C. Berkeley: home to sun-kissed biologists and liberal student activists. These are the two main stereotypes associated with this prestigious university. While these two attributes do form much of the campus’ culture, there is so much more to be discovered at University of California, Berkeley. Situated in Berkeley, California, overlooking the San Francisco Bay, lies an urban campus with a thriving Greek life. In addition to a myriad of social and extracurricular activities, are thousands of stressed out students learning at an Ivy League caliber.
Due to Berkeley being so close to downtown San Francisco, I imagine students often are granted opportunities such as exceptional jobs and internships to get a headstart on their careers. Another

Berkeley is actually much simpler than at most other universities. There are five required components of an application, along with certain high school class requirements. The application requirements are an essay/personal statement, SAT or ACT score, a common application, two letters of recommendation, and an application fee of seventy dollars. As for the high school class requirements, applying freshman must have received four english credits, three math credits, two science credits, two foreign language credits, two history credits, and one elective credit. Unlike most colleges, this university offers neither early action, nor early decision when applying; this places all students on a level playing field. With the acceptance rate being at a low 14.8%, getting into this college is highly competitive, and most applicants will be rejected. A silver-lining for students who receive the dreaded “thin envelope” is not having to pay $38,139 every year for out-of-state tuition. However, the in-state tuition is a whopping $25,000 less. In addition to this financial burden, no academic or athletic scholarships are awarded, only need-based help is offered. Despite these few downsides to attending University of California, Berkeley, you can count on leaving this institution a new person, ready to go into the world and make a

Most workers who work in a clothing store or a store in general are being told to follow the minority customers around the store because they believe that all minorities steal which is not true. Today, some may argue that we at the dawn of a new emerging Progressive Era. Most historians cite the Progressive Era as the period between 1890-1920. The United States saw massive industrialization, paradigm changing inventions such as electricity, the telephone, and automobile, but also extensive activism in social change and political reform. Walter Lippmann wrote Public Opinion in the twilight of the Progressive Era. In chapters, eight and nine, Lippmann explores the idea of “progress” in terms of stereotypes and addresses the “blind spot” inherent of all stereotypes. He delves deep into the multifaceted relationship of moral codes with how they relate to stereotypes and the facts.…

Beginning in the late 1950s, the idea of higher education had become something tangible and many middle and upper class students began to think of college education as a right, rather than a privilege. Those students arriving at Berkeley were extremely different than their parents were at their age, and because of its location, Berkeley became the most notable campus full of student energy and emotion. But it wasn't all fun for the students. Most of them were politically and socially conscious. They were involved with organizations like TASC (Towards an Active Student Community); demonstrated against HUAC- House on Un-American Activities Committee; continued in the fight for civil rights with SNCC, and most importantly, SLATE. SLATE was comprised of a group of students who were running for student government on a platform that pledged to end discrimination at the university. What they were also attempting was to create a free thinking environment and remove themselves from the "multiversity" environment which basically made students feel like cogs in a giant machine. At the time, Berkeley had many prominent professors whose system of education was not a personal one and left students feeling neglected.…

As a child, being black was never an anomaly for me. I was educated on the issues of white privilege and how black people are often targeted in a world riddled with injustice; my family on my mother’s side hailed from the deep south, so my grandparent’s lives were obviously filled with the turmoil of the racist south. While equality was always something on my mind, even as a child, being born (and raised for a semi-short while) in New York opened my eyes to the many cultures, religious, personalities, genders, and sexualities of the world. Despite this, the general heteronormative nature of the black community (and the bigotry that can spawn from it) worried me especially in a time where I was still learning about myself.…

I believe the biggest challenge college students face today is the fact that a lot of them are not mentally prepared. A lot of students do not realize that college is a whole new ball game. In high school some people do not really have to study to make an A, but in college you really have to work for just getting a B. Some students can go in with the mentality "well I was one of the best at my school, it is not going to be different in college" and that is what is wrong. Students in high school should have a week or two were they are graded as if they were in college just to give them a taste of how much they have to work and how disappointing it may be for…

In the first six months of 2012, the police, security guards, and self appointed agents of “justice” have killed 110 African-American men, women, and children. Since its publication, there have been 10 additional killings in total, 2012, which means that in 2012, there has been 1 killing every 36 hours. Many of these deaths are the consequences of stop and frisk policies, racial profiling, and a culture of White racist stereotyping of African Americans as criminals and suspects. According to Rosa Clemente, a member of Malcolm X Grassroots Movement and former vice-presidential candidate of the Green Party, “Nowhere is a Black woman or man safe from racial profiling, invasive policing, constant surveillance, and overriding…

As the United States becomes more diverse, colleges are seeing increases in minority students. However, this increase does not mean that the same number of students are leaving their college with a degree. Minorities face many challenges in college, some of which have persisted since elementary school. Although colleges try to diminish these difficulties by having different organizations where students can go to seek help, the students have already formed the mindset that they do not do as well as their white counterparts from micro-aggressions, learned thoughts and behaviors, and comparisons of resources.…

After doing rigorous college research to find the perfect college for me, that offers a Biological Science major, I have come to the conclusion that I am applying to UC Davis. UC Davis has caught my attention since it is renowned as one of the best Universities in California and the commute is only a 35-minute drive from where I live. After further research, I have also learned that UC Davis is one of the most ethnically diverse colleges in America, which is an important factor to me, as a person of color. Furthermore, I am deeply interested in majoring in Biological Sciences and I have read that UC Davis has a strong STEM program.…
