The environment surrounding the Buddhist temple was different than that of the environment of Christian churches, mosques, synagogues. The great books of Buddhism were not really described that much in the interview with the Buddhist monk. Instead Buddhism focuses more on the practice of the teachings of the Buddha. Buddhist do not necessarily read the teachings of Buddha all the time. The main practice for Buddhists is living the way of the Buddha…

This was an eye opening documentary that identifies the symbolism of Mecca, experience, and meaning of Hajj. The camera follows three individuals from different countries on their spiritual journey to Hajj, located in Mecca. All three went to Mecca to participate in Hajj, an extremely large group of people gather for a quest of redemption as Islamic pilgrims. The people involved in this documentary are very serious about their faith; they go to great lengths to make this spiritual journey. The documentary expresses that the ones that make it to Hajj are changed spiritually forever.…

Hindus of Indian descent in America have created a balance between their religion and Indian cultural religion with the pressures to Westernize. Temples have been built in American in the styles of northern or southern India and dedicated by Hindu priests from India. These temples create a place to worship. There is always the threat that modern American traditions, such as eating meat, racial intermarriage, and considerable mobility in society may interfere. The temples welcome the serious seeker of non-Indian descent which speaks well for Hindu hospitality.…
Mr. Patil and his family have moved from India and have no family here in the United States, which is very different from the Indian culture he had back home. Furthermore, they are the first family from India to move to Springfield, Massachusetts. Therefore, it would be beneficial to educate the Patil family on local Hindu temples in the area, such as the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Agawam, Massachusetts to help provide spiritual and social support for this family. Hindu temples would have the ability to provide a sense of community for this family, while also giving them social interactions with others who have similar cultural values and beliefs. There is a restaurant in West Springfield, Massachusetts called Pintus Indian Palace, which serves amazing Indian food which the Patil family may enjoy visiting. Finally,…
What struck me when i first walked in is that no one was wearing shoes inside the temple. When we asked our guide why is it that people are not wearing shoes inside the temple despite negative Fahrenheit temperature outside he explained that in the hindu religion the temple is treated much like you own home. So in most religions people don’t wear shoes inside their house and the Hindu religion believes that temples should be treated much like your home.…
I recently went to an interfaith convention and met many people from many religions. Among them were Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism. I got to learn a little about every religion, and I thought you might be interested since you are going to be a religion major. All these religions vary because not all of them have one God. There are some with many gods, just like there are some religions that do not have a God.…
It is a great feeling going to a place where it’s a huge matter in one’s life. “Revisiting Sacred Ground” N. Scott Momaday had made a pilgrimage which his Kiowa ancestors. Momaday has said,” There are certain villages, and towns mountains and plains that, having seen them, walked in them, lived in them, even for a day, we keep forever in the mind’s eye.” Just like how Momaday relived his ancestor’s trails, I had a chance as well. I was lucky enough to be able to go on such a sacred journey that people would pay in thousands of dollars. The pilgrimage I would like to talk about is the one I took to a sacred city in India called Badrinath. I follow Hinduism, and in Hinduism there is a saying/belief that if we go on this enriching, and spiritual journey, we will go to heaven after we pass. I have a guru, like a living god, who I listen to and look up to. He took me on this spiritual journey.…
Buddhism is religion that is based off of peace and spirituality taught by the teachings of Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gotama. Many who follow its teachings believe Buddhism to be more of a way of life or lifestyle choice rather a religion. Buddha is not a god, but one man that taught his followers a path of enlightenment from his experiences and values. Buddha’s main teachings were the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. The Four Noble Truths were teachings about suffering, pain, disease, happiness, loneliness, and aging. It explained why we as humans can overcome certain obstacles in our lives by looking at the more spiritual side of things such as “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” (Dalai Lama). The Eightfold Path is the teachings of being moral, being aware of our actions and thoughts, developing compassion for others, and most importantly gaining wisdom from the understanding of The Four Noble Truths.…
I grew up in a house where both my parents practiced the teachings of Sikhism and Hinduism. My father’s job required us to move every three years to different countries, most of them of Christian majority and because of this I have been exposed to a few religions. However, ever since I first started studying religion I have always found Buddhism more relating to my beliefs more than any other religion has since it is more a philosophy against a religion. I was especially interested in the Theravada branch of Buddhism, or “The Doctrine of Elders”, which is essentially a school of Buddhism that follow the Tipitaka, a collection of religious texts. The Tipitaka is known to be one of the oldest records of Buddha’s teachings. The thing that interested me the most was the idea of no “supreme being” and the concept of after-life and reincarnation.…
Once you’ve run that gauntlet, and been allowed entry – but only after a good, long 2-mins inspection from the peep-hole – chances are that you’ll be left to find a place to sit, while the family disappears inside to wear shirts and pull on trousers over their banyans and striped boxer shorts – the “Kulkarni Bermudas”. That done, it is not unusual for them to announce, “We just had tea”. And that is that. Don’t take it personally. We are like that only. If you had visions of chai and pakodas, you're in the wrong part of India. The Rest of India may waste time and money on hospitality. We have better things to do.…
