An expression that used spray paint as a tool to draw or write on subway walls, trains, bricks, doors, etc. The police called it vandalism but the people called it art. This idea of graffiti was a very controversial topic that emerged from Hip-hop. It affected many people, both those who actually performed it and those who were against it. For those who did graffiti, for them it meant just writing or drawing on a public space or place. For those who opposed it saw it as damage to their property and so this negatively affected the society and politics. Graffiti is definitely an inter linking factor to hip-hop. It is seen as an artistic form of speaking out towards authority, as well as communication and expression. Since 1969, graffiti became a way of life with its own code of behavior, secret gathering places, slang etc (Kaminski). There was also a practice within graffiti known as “tagging” which was basically like a nickname you gave yourself that you would tag onto the wall with the spray can for the whole world to see.
