Q1: What does Lopez mean when he states that "race is plastic". How does this correlate with his idea of racial fabrication?

The term "race is plastic" to me means that race is man-made. Race is an opinion that's forced on an individual by the larger population. In other words, this phrase describes the concept of race as a man-made creation. For example, when a child is born he/she wasn't born a certain race, they're told they are a certain race. It's a comparison between an idea or concept and a physical creation. Like any other man-made creation, race is fashioned after the ideal of its creators. But, unlike plastic, race does not require materials for its creation. People categorize race as a way to "define" someone based by the color of their skin, but in fact, it's brought upon their environment; created by society or in other words constructed socially. Race also constitutes an integral part of a whole social fabric including gender and class. For example, Men have more power than Women. Men are told that they can do what they want as for Women, are disadvantaged to being able to do things socially. Women are told that they can't walk alone, be with certain people of color, or even wear certain type of clothing. When it comes to jobs, men get paid more than women do, why, because it just happens to be that society made it become that way. When we were born, we didn't get to choose which gender we wanted to become so thats how gender is plastic. When it comes to the class relations, many society's have a class system where the rich are at the top of the hierarchy and the poor stay at the bottom. For example, India; If one is born in a high class they are to stay in that class system. As for a low class citizen, they also stay in that class but as servants or slaves. There's no such thing as escalating into another class (unless you move to another country). I very much agree to Lopez's ideas that society labeled people so its "easier" to know what people

Race is a factor of life that is constantly being judged by society. Society has created individuals who judge others on skin color, and ethnicity; spawning hate and spreading acceptance of different set of standards to each race. “Largely about what wealthy… white men wear in silicon valley and wall street” (Sengupta 228). Race is part of the identity, most of the time it determines how you are treated by others, how one’s life is lived, and which stereotypes are carried. “... from racist people who think all Asians look the same! or ...Why on earth would you say something like that?” (Chung para. 9). Race is the…

Currently, Race is defined as, a group of people sharing the same culture, history, language, etc.; an ethnic group. We need to evaluate Race as a social construct rather than a cultural and biological idea. Race needs to be redefined so that it does not hold a profoundness similar to how biological or cultural characteristics would. As we identify the futility of categorizing people by superficial and generic qualities, we begin to accept the complexity of more important human distinctions in an ethnological means. Considering Race as a recent way of thinking strips away its power within societal norms of a westernized culture. Exhausting the power Race has over our thinking will improve the way we interact with one another. When we stereotype…

Ian F. Haney Lopez, author of The Social Construction of Race, expresses race in its true lighting. It goes deeper than the color of one’s skin, color of one’s eyes, the shape of their features, and the sound coming off their lips. The freedom of people was all based upon “the characteristics of our hair, complexion, and facial features” and that they “still influence whether we are figuratively free or enslaved.” There is nothing false that Lopez says. He completely points out the false laws that the “white man” abides by and the others are subjected to. The structure of the article is very fluid in it chronologically backs itself up.…

When people think about race and the different social groups that surround them, you also have to think of the stereotypes that go along with them. Assume that the world’s definition of race is “an idea or scheme recognizing that the human population divides into several distinct groups, the members of which have traits and skills in common with each other that they do not share with members of other such groups.” There are problems with this definition in many different ways philosophically, biologically, etc.…

    Race as biology

Audrey Smedley, an American social anthropologist and a professor of anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University defines the race as an ideology or a human concept. In fact, Racist ideology has a specific history, and started in a time where being “colored skin” is considered abnormal. While being white was the norm, at that time biology was important and science was influencing the population. Indeed, there were, are and will be physical differences between people. Yet, what is significant about these when it comes to race is not the biology of those differences, but the social weight we attach to them. Therefore, the race still exists not because it is biological or normal, but because society kept on emphasizing on the differences and even went on by pointing out these.…
