Goodnight Mr. Tom

The novel “Goodnight Mr. Tom” is about an evacuee named William Beech, who has been sent to the country side. He was sent because of the 2nd world war (blitz). After a while mr.tom finds out that William has made friends with a boy named Zach. But what mr.tom doesn’t know is that William is being abused by his own mother.
Zach was a scruffy boy in need of a haircut, not well dressed but articulate. “Zach, Tom discovered was a voluble, curly haired boy ... in need ... of a haircut. A red jersey was drapped around his bare shoulders and a pair of frayed, rather colourful, men’s braces held up some well –darned green shorts.” This reveals to us that Zach does not care about his appearance.
What Zach says and what language he uses is sharp, forward and clever. “the strange boys eye seemed to penetrate so deeply into willies that he felt sure the he could read his thought” this shows us that Zach is confident , sociable kid who can make friends quickly, natural leader , Zach talks fast and friendly , and at first Willie is overwhelmed by it . When Zach notices this, he explains that since his family is in the theatre, they move around a lot. When Zach meets someone he likes, he goes forward and makes friends fast. We know this because Zach says “as soon as I see someone I like I talk to them.” this implies that Zach is friendly and forward and has the ability to socialise.
What other characters say about Zach. On page 90 it quotes that George says “he’s a queer one.” This shows us that George does not like new people or new kids from other cities.
How Zach’s actions are when he meets Willie. “But before Willie could reply the boy was already chattering on” this quote suggests that Zach talks fast and wants to make friends quickly and not waste time.
