History and Aesthetics of Art Deco
ART DECO: Art deco is a type of art that grew in the 1920’s with a revival in the 1960’s. Art Deco was primarily an elegant design style dominant in decorative art, fashion, jewelry, textiles, furniture design, interior decoration, and architecture. It flourished in the united states and Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. The origin of art deco began two decades earlier in Paris. The decorative arts society inspired the name art deco but the term did not become famous until the publication of art deco of the 20’s and the 30’s by Bevis hillier in 1968. Currently many examples of art deco exist however two major icons that represent art deco would be the New York Chrysler building and radio city music hall. Also art deco is a decorative style that is essentially an extension of the French art nouveau and English aesthetic styles but also includes elements of arts and crafts form.

Historical and cultural factors that influence the design: From the poster it is clear that it is influenced by the infrastructure of old buildings in the 50’s with lights overlapping each other on the roof. Also the artist has used a traditional design of a theater which was built during the early 1950’s.The artist has clearly being influenced by the revolution of theater music and movies and that’s why there is like an old style camera in front of the poster to represent this.
Art Deco is defined as a style of decorative art marked chiefly by geometric motifs curvilinear forms, sharply defined outlines often bold colors. And throughout this poster we can see how the artist has used bold colors such as purple and yellow to design this piece. He has also used sharp outlines to make the shape of this building very clear and neat to the audience.

Design element: color: Throughout the poster the artist has used two colors; these include a primary color yellow and a secondary color violet. By the use of these colors the artist has really brought out the shape of the architecture.

The assignment this week was to write a two-page paper describing how the Victorian Movement, Arts and Crafts Movement, and Art Nouveau Movements were related and/or impacted each other. In order to accomplish this task, one would have to explore the origins of Art Nouveau. Upon reading the selected reading and reviewing the required videos it was clear that it could be argued as to which was the last movement of the Nineteenth-century or the first movement of the Twentieth-century. Additionally, it could be concluded from the selected reading that Art Nouveau best fits into the end and the beginning of the Arts and Crafts movement, dating from 1895 to 1905. It was a continuation of the older arts and crafts movement of the British designer, William Morris.…

The period between 1890 and 1910 marked the movement of Art Nouveau, the French phrase for (“new art”). The period is most well-known as a rebellion against 19th century academic art in which artists began seeking inspiration from natural forms and structures. It can only be assumed which artist led this movement. Eventually, modernist styles like Art Deco replaced Art Nouveau during the Roaring 20’s, but Art Nouveau is considered an important transition from historical snooze-fests to eye-capturing works made then and today. 1897 marked the formation of the Vienna Secession. It was composed of a group of Austrian artists, of course, who “objected to the prevailing conservatism of the Vienna Künstlerhaus with its traditional orientation toward…

In the early half of the nineteenth century in Europe and American started the slow rise of two artistic movements, Pop Art and Art Nouveau. This was in direct response to the mass media being produced in popular culture. Pop Art emerged partly from absorption of ideas put forward in the work of various artist such as Roy Lichtenstein and partly from a spontaneous response to the commercial imagery that was beginning to swamp the visual world in that country. Art Nouveau originally formed as a response to mass media under a group of artists in New York who wanted to counter pop culture with their art, music, and literature. The prime example of the Art Nouveau movement can be embodied in the work of Yves Klein. Roy Lichtenstein defined the…

French Rococo Era Painter, 1703-1770 Francois Boucher seems to have been perfectly attuned to his times, a period which had cast off the pomp and circumstance characteristic of the preceding age of Louis XIV and had replaced formality and ritual by intimacy and artificial manners. Boucher was very much bound to the whims of this frivolous society, and he painted primarily what his patrons wanted to see. It appears that their sight was best satisfied by amorous subjects, both mythological and contemporary. The painter was only too happy to supply them, creating the boudoir art for which he is so famous. Boucher was born in Paris on Sept. 29, 1703, the son of Nicolas Boucher, a decorator who specialized in embroidery design. Recognizing his sons artistic potential, the father placed young Boucher in the studio of François Lemoyne, a decorator-painter who worked in the manner of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Though Boucher remained in Lemoynes studio only a short time, he probably derived his love of delicately voluptuous forms and his brilliant color palette from the older masters penchant for mimicking the Venetian decorative painters.…

While walking through the Philadelphia Museum of Art, trying to decide which piece I should do further research on and write a paper on, I discovered The Crucifixion, with the Mourning Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist”. This is oil on panel painting by Rogeier van der Weyden in the Netherlands (historical name,15th-16th century), Europe in 1460. The time period that this was made in was Early Italian Renaissance. It is 71 x 73 3/8 inches. The vibrant colors in this painting is so enthralling that I could not help but be interested about it.…

The main controversy raised by the movement was how practical it could be in the modern world. Progressives claimed that it was trying to relive the past and that the Arts and Crafts Movement could not be taken as practical in mass urban and industrialized society. But the ideas still managed to spread throughout all of Europe and eventually to North America. Though in Europe the movement stood for anti-industrialism in America the ideas were slightly different. They embraced the movement because they felt it could be enable a new experience in industrial consumerism. The movement flourished in the art’s era of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, especially in the middle class. It initiated the attempts to reinterpret European arts and crafts ideals for architecture and furniture. The designs emphasized the qualities of the materials being used, often using patterns inspired by British flora. They were influenced by the Gothic Revival and were interested in medieval…
