My passion for golf started when I was nine years old. I entered a golf course for the very first time, after my physical education teacher suggested to try the sport of golf because the course is located near my home in Germany. Many people still have the attitude that golf is not a sport and only old people ride golf carts and “play” golf. You will realize that it is a sport when you walk 18 holes with your golf bag, which weighs about 50 pounds, on your shoulders. On a sunny Friday in September 1997, I went to the kids’ practice to see if I would like to start playing golf. At practice, I met my new golf instructor from England who had a funny accent when he spoke German, and I made friends for life. Right at the first practice, I became addicted to golf. The reason for that was that I had hit a perfect shot during the first lesson, without even feeling that the racquet has touched the golf ball. Since that moment, I spend almost all my leisure time at the golf course and tried to improve my game.
The first chapter informs the audience about the most important events in the history of golf. Further in the book, I am going to introduce the history of golf in Germany and then give detailed facts about my home club Golfclub Steigerwald.
Chapter 1: Golf in Germany
The history of golf goes back to the thirteenth century. Nobody can say exactly when the sport of golf has originated precisely. Generally, it is maintained that the sport of golf comes from Scotland, but there are also some other theories which see the origin of golf somewhere else. As alternatives to Scotland, countries are often mentioned: Holland (1297),
France (about 1200), Belgium
