On October 9, 1781, the Americans had finished digging their trenches around Yorktown where their artillery would be located. Over the next several days the French and the American artillery would fire over 15,000 rounds into fortified British positions. The constant bombardment was critical for Washington’s plan to work. It suppressed the British ability to organize a effective counter-fire and gave the ground forces the cover they needed to move closer and dig another trench closer to the British positions. To complete the trench, the Franco/American forces would have to capture two redoubts (small fortified outposts). On October 14, each force sent 400 men to capture redoubts 9 and 10. It took them less than 30 minutes to capture both…

How many of us like eating vegetables? Not a lot right, but growing vegetables is still as difficult today as it was in the 1700’s. The invention of the seed drill was really one of the most useful inventions in that time because it helped make the farmers work easier. The seed drill was created by Jethro Tull to make the lives of the laborers easier and not waste the seeds of what could’ve been a surplus of food. The seed drill was a mechanical machine that would plant the seeds in rows rather than the method used prior where farmers would scatter them wastefully because they had to dig all the holes themselves.…

The 1850’s brought various types of mining to the Colorado Rockies; gold, silver, and coal. First, the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush in 1859 brought thousands of prospectors to the Front Range, and coal mining began shortly after. The Colorado Silver Boom followed in 1879, when major amounts of silver were discovered in Leadville, CO. The conditions for miners gradually became dire, resulting in numerous retaliatory strikes which were met with extreme, sometimes violent, opposition from employers of the mines and the U.S. government.…
