Psychology of Addiction
Summer U1C, 2014
Instructions for Essay [35% of Course Mark]
Due Date: 28/1/2014
A single, 1000 word essay must be submitted through the Turnitin portal on the
Moodle site for the course, Psychology of Addiction, by 5pm [local Sydney time] on the 28th January 2014.
The title of the essay is:
What causes addiction, and what is the best approach to counteract it?
The essay should seek to construct a persuasive argument based upon a selection of key empirical evidence, rather than offer a general description of facts. Quality of essays will be judged on the integration of evidence with persuasive argument.
Formatting and referencing is to be done using APA style.
The essay is worth 35% of the overall course mark. Late submissions will be penalized with a mark of 0, so make sure you submit well ahead of the deadline to avoid last minute complications. The 1000 word limit is very strict, and there will be a 5% penalty for going over, plus a further 5% penalty for every 50 words thereafter. Thus, an essay of 1300 words would receive a mark of 0.
Because of the tight word limit, and the broad range of possible answers, you must select a subset of the available evidence to consider. Such focus on a subset of material is welcomed, but must be justified as part of your answer. In-text citations form part of the word count. Citations can be in any standard format employed by scientific journals
(including number format which has a lower word count). The bibliography itself does not form part of the word count, nor does the title or other peripherals such as your name and student ID number.
Formatting and referencing is to be done using APA style.
Note:
- Special consideration requests to waive a late penalty should be made through the
Special Consideration Online service on MyUNSW, unless you are registered with
SEADU. Please contact the course coordinator, Marios Panayi, if you intend to make a SEADU or a
