As part of the powers given to the Supreme court, there are four major responsibilities that must be upheld. First, the Supreme court acts as the final destination for all cases that are being appealed. This makes it “the court of last resort” for many people that feel they did not receive a fair trial (about SC). It is the Supreme Court’s responsibility to review the case and determine the outcome for the defendant. Second, the Supreme Court has the power of judicial review, which allows them to ensure that each branch of government is staying within its own limitations of power (about SC). This gives the Supreme court enough authority to regulate the Executive and the Legislative branches of the U.S. Government. Third, the Supreme Court has the power to remove or impede any law that it finds unconstitutional. This allows for the Supreme court to protect the civil rights and liberties of American citizens from unjust laws (about SC). Finally, the Supreme Court has the role of regulating the democratic style government of the United states. These limitations are in place to ensure that the majority cannot pass laws that would limit the constitutional rights of the minority. In recent history, the two individuals that have brought forward the most change by the Supreme Court are Chief Justices Earl Warren and Chief Justice William Rehnquist. While both approached the way they ran the court in different manners, they were both viewed as good leaders of the court. Chief Justice Earl Warren served as the 14th Chief Justice. During this time, he was considered a successful Chief Justice and got his way using “forceful leadership” styles (history). Warren was so favorable during his reign that some have even considered him to be ranked with the top three Chief Justices’ of all time (history). The period in which Chief Justice Warren served is now known as the Warren era. Many of Warren’s greatest court decisions during this time, aligned with the views the liberal democrats of that era. Some of his most influential cases surrounded the topics of unconstitutional segregation of public schools, the right of counsel to the poor, and the use of miranda warnings. In contrast, Chief Justice William Rehnquist lead the court in a much different manner. One of the biggest reasons Rehnquist was appointed to his position was because his moral beliefs aligned with the conservative’s opinions for social issues.
