Hitchhiker By Lucille Fletcher
Ghost stories, strange events, and plot twists are all things that often catch the attention of readers. In Lucille Fletcher’s The Hitchhiker a man is trying to convince readers that he is not crazy; however, as the story broadens he sees the same hitchhiker over and over again. The sight of him is making Ronald Adams crazy. Fletcher’s decisions help develop this craziness as she creates these elements. The elements and plot work together to make The Hitchhiker an effective play. Fletcher uses the plot and element to make an effective play. When Ronald Adams says “But I must tell this quickly, I am not mad now” (1001), it makes the audience think he is crazy and maybe scared of him. This adds to the plot because when anyone says they are

In the rising action of the story Fletcher raises the suspense by having Ronald Adams see the hitchhiker over again and he cannot escape him. “For now he began to be everywhere. Whenever I stopped, even for a moment –for gas, for oil, for a drink of pop, a cup of coffee, a sandwich –he was there” (1010). To an audience, this adds more suspense to the story because nobody knows who this man is and what his purpose in the story is and how he is important.
