Summary
In the context of Singapore’s ageing population, the literature reviewed highlighted the importance of achieving lifelong employability for mature workers in the 21st Century via career transition (CT). Shifts in employment landscape have led to the replacement of long-term careers by protean and boundaryless careers. The literature adopted the stance that the onus lies on the individual to achieve a successful CT, mid-lifers lack skills and adaptability to remain employable. In view of their inability for a CT, a model explicating the factors and their relationships for a successful CT was proposed on the basis of using an objective approach to measure a successful CT.
Theoretical Perspectives
The article adopted a flawed stance of an objective approach in defining a successful CT as quantifiable measures are key indicators of career success to those in early career (Warr, 2008). This is contradictory since the study focuses on middle-aged professionals undergoing CT in pursuit of aspirations, self-development, and a sense of purpose in their lives (Kim, 2013). Subjects did not quantify career success in monetary or tangible rewards, but via non-quantifiable means as each had their own perception of success in accordance with what they sought to achieve. Hence, using a subjective approach to measure a successful CT for mature workers would be better.
Tension exists between personality and lifelong employability mindset. The model stipulates: individuals high in conscientiousness with the right lifelong employability mindset, “adaptability, resilience and preparedness for CT”, would enjoy a successful CT.
