Dementia is “a group of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily functioning”. It is a disease that has no cure. To prolong the disease, drugs are prescribed for it like Aricept and Exelon. These medications work to balance the chemicals within the body and brain, and to increase neurological pathways within the brain. People that are diagnosed can use some holistic medicines like vitamin supplements. Other therapies that can be used is music or art therapy to calm the mind. The difference between using a holistic medication or a conventional medication is that holistic medications do not prolong the patient’s life, and, in most cases, it doesn’t work to keep the symptoms away. The neonatal unit is the part of the hospital that deals with illful infants. Conventional medicine is the ideal type of medicine to use in this field because most babies admitted into the NICU, or neonatal intensive care unit, are newborns. They have not had the time to build up their immune system, so they are susceptible to multiple illnesses. Natalie Ruby, a WHNP, or women health nurse practitioner, agrees that conventional medicine is the best form of medicine to use in this type of situation. Most babies admitted into the NICU are usually admitted because of premature birth, a respiratory difficulty, or aspiration pneumonia.
