Holy Ghost: Documentary On Apalachian Pentacostal Snake
Religion is a controversial topic, there are so many different varieties of beliefs and philosophies. Throughout the documentary titled, Holy Ghost – Documentary on Apalachian Pentacostal Snake, we are exposed to a Christian belief of ceremonial handling of poisonous snakes. Members of this religious group seek the Lord for guidance and also in order to receive the Holy Ghost. There is not one person in charge of their meetings. The group leader is often established among the members after arrival. They believe in everyone participating in the prayer and worshiping of the Lord in spirit and in truth. Once a service is started everyone partakes in thanking the Lord and addressing what he or she needs. After prayer the group joins together in song.
We learn that there are holiness churches all over America. They share literal understanding of the bible and unpretentiousness in approach. They speak in tongues, handing poisonous snakes, lay hands among those whom are sick leaving them to only recover. In regards to the church throughout this documentary, the act of snake handling is viewed as a form of proof in their faith and the manifestation in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues is a way for God to come through a speaker and give a message.
Meetings occur a few times a week for anywhere

I felt as though the documentary, Holy Ghost – Documentary on Apalachian Pentacostal Snake, lacked important material in order to understand the meaning behind their rituals. Another question I have is in reference to their preference of snakes versus others animals? Also, if they speak in tongue as a form to communication with the Lord, and Holy Spirit why would they need a satanic symbol such as a snake involved? I do not have a strong religious background, therefore I was unaware if some of the aspects of this film were specific to this group or a general rule of

In this text, Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for worshipping God that all leaders should possess. In chapter 1, both authors begin the text with the concept of how the body has fallen in love with the method of worship and not the actual act of being in the Presence of God. They briefly paint a picture of the leader of worship bringing forth a golden calf and trying to lead the congregation into worshipping the calf. They compare this extreme scenario with how the body of Christ has gotten in today’s local churches. According to the authors, the leaders and congregation instead of worshipping God have begun worshipping the way worship in each church is presented.…

In Horace Miner’s “Body Ritual among the Nacirema,” the reader is introduced to an interesting group called the Nacirema, whose culture is then described and dissected in very tribal and primitive terms. At first, it is unclear as to where or how this culture exists under the guidelines and practices and beliefs its society maintains; but, the reader soon discovers, with contextual clues and a bit of pondering, that Nacirema is actually American culture. Miner uses creative contextual clues and diction to confuse the reader, letting the discovery and satire push his purpose, as well as allow reflection on how certain societies tend to inaccurately…

The narrator writes about the strange rituals that people from the Nacirema tribe performs. After reading the article, you understand that the Nacirema tribe represents the American people. Another way you can tell that the Nacirema tribe is about the American people is because “Nacirema” is actually America backwards. The narrator uses many different references to explain our everyday doings as rituals. Some of the references in which he put were Medicine men, Herbalist, and Holy mouth men which were doctors, pharmacist and dentist. He explains that the ritual of getting ready in the morning is a very long process to do and then continues the story to explain how Americans have lots of medicines but is only use maybe once or twice. And with that, he explains how the adult do not mind going to do doctors but when do only adds more medication and the children are too scared of the people in white coats. The narrator then explains the “Holy mouth men”, which again is the dentist. He believes that there is a huge fascination with the mouth and in which takes a huge part of social relationships. He explains that if it were not for the “holy mouth men” then teeth would start falling out and that lovers would start to reject them. The video was filmed in two churches in Alabama and Georgia in what looks like the 60's, but in reality was the late 80's or very early 90's, I believe the copyright date is 1991. In Jesus' Name: Taking Up Serpents heavily documents the practice of snake handling in this religious sect, but mentions the consumption of strychnine very minimally. The people seem happy, but not particularly affluent. They are presumably in the Appalachian region of the states, where coal mining, poverty and a hard life are all too common. The whole thing is presented without commentary or criticism allowing the viewer to experience the culture and apply their own opinions. Taking Up Serpents shows us how literal interpretations of biblical texts are executed with fervor in the name of God. The filmmakers do not appear biased or like they have any hidden agenda. It seems to be a straight-forward documentation of a church service. The filmmakers did not go out of their way to make these people seem simple or poor, which I am sure would have been easy to do with selective editing.…

My cultural immersion focus is on the religious war in Nigeria. One of the interesting things I found in my research was that, in Nigeria the Christian faith and the Muslim faith represents the greatest percentage of religions. I also learned that the Christians and Muslims pray every day several times a day. With that being said, I wondered if they believed in a higher entity prayed every day, who they are praying to? And what is their belief system based on? (question 1) Since their Christian faith seems to be divided into Catholic, Protestant or some other, I decided to attend a typical Catholic Church service and a Friday mid-day Muslim prayer service. Maybe I should not have used the word typical to describe a Catholic Church service. Me, being from a culturally full Baptist background, it was anything but typical. First let me begin by saying, St Joseph Catholic Church is Macon Georgia, is one beautiful church on the inside, but the service its self was extremely long and somewhat boring. Coming from a Baptist background, I definitely had a culture shock. To get the feel of the church, I arrived very early. Because I was a visitor, they welcomed me, I filled out a visitor’s info card and I was lead to a seat. The choir is singing as I’m being lead to a seat, so I’m assuming this is the Praise & Worship part of the order of service. Again I say, “Coming from a Baptist background in an African American church, our Praise & Worship time is much different. After the song, the priest came out with the opening prayer with repeated verses. The priest would say the verse first and then instantly, the congregation would repeat the verse. I think they refer to this part of the service as the Kyrie. Then another priest said another pray and began to tell somewhat of a story. I didn’t quite get it, but it looked as if the rest of the congregation received it well. After the story telling, we hugged everybody around us…

Dennis Covington began to get closer to the congregation and he soon had a taste for handling snakes. After he became familiar with the church services, he began to invite his family to come along. Covington's daughter, Ashley, also had an influence on Covington becoming more interested in the snake handling ritual. She was the one person that he thought would never like an act such as snake handling. Her reaction to the services startled him. "The raw hillbilly music had been imprinted on her genes, like something deep within her she was remembering" (114). Ashley's reaction to the ritual brought on a more determined and willing Covington to search their family history and see if anyone was once a snake handler. The southerners' beliefs about snake handling were questionable and…

As I started to read “Body Ritual Among The Nacirema” by Horace Miner I was really confused. You told us that the homework was to write what was the real true meaning of this reading but I had to reread the pages over and over to find the true meaning to the reading that Horace Miner was talking about. It is a culture named Nacirema and that no one really know much about this culture. And also that they come from the east. He talks about the rituals they have and how they care for their bodies and try to make it look beautiful because they believe that the human body is ugly and that is the reason why we decay when we die. He also talks about how the Nacirema culture they take care of their mouths because…
