The world portrayed in the hospital ward is one of sexual repression and inhibition. This is exemplified in the Big Nurse as well as in Nurse Pilbow, who is frightened of the patients' sexuality. It is frequently emphasized that the Big Nurse has large breasts, the mark of her femininity, but she tries to conceal them. Everything about her and the ward is sterile, cold, and lifeless, from the Big Nurse's manner down to the white starched uniforms of the staff.…
It is rare in a movie or TV show that a gay character has a strong lead. Him or her usually are only represented by their sexuality. Amy Zimmerman is a writer for the Daily Beast, specializing in entertainment. In an article she wrote “It Ain’t Easy Being Bisexual on TV”, she critiques the media’s portrayal of bisexuals and bisexuality. She states that most homosexual male characters are reduced to the clueless definition of “a disco-dancing, Oscar Wilde-reading, Streisand ticket-holding friend of Dorothy,” a man whom gayness in an all- encompassing personality (561). Amy provides facts and prestigious resources persuading the audience that this is actually happening in the media and television. However, there have been many different TV shows…
The sources answer the question of how has society adapted it’s the view of gay rights over time. The sources show how in the early 1900’s, society was not accepting at all of homosexual individuals. The source “Havelock Ellis on Gay Life in the American City (1915)” talks about how homosexual people were called sexually inverse, and how they were viewed as sexual predators. It describes how many, who wear the red neckties of the inverse, are also male prostitutes. As the 20th century progressed, some movement towards acceptance was made. In the source “James Justen Recalls Growing Up Gay in the 1950s”, Justen tells of how he remained closeted throughout high school, and then came out to his parents after. He was lucky, his parents were very…

Some people in the ranch live more lonely lives than others. One of the loneliest persons on the ranch has to be Curly’s wife. As she is the only women on the ranch she feels isolated and left out from the men and feels different. Also no one really wants to talk to her as she is the wife of the boss’s son and no one talks to her out of fear of getting into a fight with Curly who has power upon the ranch to fire people as he is the boss’s son and the workers did not want to get fired as there were no jobs around. This can be seen as tragic as if a worker is accidentally seen communicating with Curly’s wife Curly will want him fired or will want to fight him as Curly is seen as a character as aggressive. Also Curly’s wife is seen as a “flirt” or just wants attention as she is the only female on the ranch, but Curly doesn’t want her to talk to anyone. As…

Although brothel visits usually involved encounters between a man and a woman, they often divide themselves by whose perspective they focus on. The final category analyzes little of the prostitutes own thoughts or emotions during these liaisons, but rather the men. Many members of the BEF kept their own personal journals in which they recorded their experiences along and behind the Western Front in France. Despite extramarital sex being a hushed topic, some soldiers still felt comfortable enough to write about the brothels they observed or visited, these sources are the main focus of historians who study the male heterosexuality of the BEF.…
Curley’s wife has an “ache for attention” to the men on the ranch as she is deprived of the basic needs of communication. She therefore throws herself at the men acting as a flirt and a “tart” but the reason she does that is because she is “awfully lonely.” Being stuck on the ranch with no one to talk to leaves her isolated and wanting to pursue her long lost dream of acting. She has a Dream to be “in the pitchers” until her husband Curly came along. The first person Curley’s wife tells about the Dream is Lennie, as she believes he is the only one that listens to her. She told him that she “coulda been in the movies” as she was “a natural.” She would have “nice clothes and…big hotels” but her “ol’ lady wouldn’t let her.” Curley’s wife will have had everything she ever dreams of, but being married to Curley leaves her with no future and her Dream just a fragile aspiration of the past. She dosn’t want to be married to Curley, she “don’t like Curley” as he restricts her from the basic socialisation with other people on the ranch, especially the men. She wants so greatly to become an actress, but as her Dream is crushed and the reminiscence that it didn’t happened proves how significant it is to her. Curley’s wife not being able to pursue her dreams has been the reason for her loneliness and desire for a better life. Therefore, Curley’s wife shows how important her acting Dream is to her,…

The film Chasing Amy is based on a middle class, white male (Holden McNeil) who falls in love with a lesbian named Alyssa Jones. Holden is portrayed as a conservative male who is bound by rigid ideas of what is normal' and is ruled by his stereotypes. Alyssa Jones is as experienced as one can get in her search for sexuality and is portrayed as a "non-agenda, male friendly lesbian", by Holden's friend Banky who in himself has problems with finding his true sexual nature. Alyssa is the main character of focus in this essay in that she described herself as not "given a map at birth". Throughout her lifetime she experiments with people of both genders and believes that by confining herself to only one gender she is in turn limiting her options to find true love.…
Issues of discrimination to transgender also occur outside of detention centers. Kit Yan shared the social injustices he experienced as a queer, transgender, and Asian American in his performance Queer Heartache. He became aware of the unacceptance of transgenders in the US when he expressed his newfound queer identity through rainbow stickers on his new Jeep Cherokee. As a result, his lights were smashes and tires were broken. Like transgender detainees, Yan was out casted and assigned to a secluded dorm on college campus. Similarly to how detainees are told to silence when assaulted and rape, Yan was recommended that for his own safety he should remove the stickers which expressed his pride and identity. The treatment of both Yan and transgender detainees illustrates the degree of unacceptance the transgender community has received in the US society.…
