Hoover Dam Research Paper
When concrete is poured it contracts and heats up. This means that you cannot pour a whole lot all at one time or it will take years to dry if it is a big enough structure that you are building. A good example of this is the hoover dam which used over 3.3 million yards on concrete in the making of it. A common misconception is that they poured all the concrete at one time and waited for it to dry if they would of did it this way with all the heat that would have built up it would have taken over 125 years for it all to dry.

The hoover dam was built in just 5 years which was 2 years under schedule. The total cost of building it was $48.9 million. Concrete has been around for a long time and used to build big structures for thousands of years.

Marcellus Shale is a geologic formation containing natural gas that stretches across much of the Eastern U.S., from New York to Tennessee. It has been a topic of hot debate over the past few years and continues to be a point of contention between landowners, governments, institutions, and private companies, even earning the attention of President Obama in his 2012 State of the Union speech. While geologists have known of the Marcellus Shale for years, early estimates of the amount of natural gas contained within it were fairly low. However, the use of the hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracking) drilling technique has dramatically increased the amount of natural gas that is recoverable (Geology.com). Current estimates suggest that reserves in the Marcellus Shale could meet U.S. energy demand for six years (Buurma, 2012).…

When the Elwha Dam was demolished it was the largest controlled sediment release in a dam removal project anywhere in the world. Because of the amount of sediment behind large dams like the Elwha, the demolition must be done gradually over time to ensure that there is not an overflow of sediment rushed down the river which could cause significant damage to the landscape and the organisms which inhabit it. At the time of the dam removal the Elwha was holding behind it 15,000,000 cubic yards of silt. Sediment buildup isn't the only thing that dams can change about the soil. Many geological occurrences have been blamed on dams.…

Originally called “Maketewa” by Native Americans, Mill Creek is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It flows roughly 28 miles, starting at Liberty Township and flowing through 34 other communities and is a tributary to the Ohio River. The origins of mill creek dates back to the late 1700s, around 1787. Settlers used Mill Creek to transport goods and other items. Mill Creek has been abused for over 2 centuries. By 1810, major factories opened up along mill creek and its tributaries and dumped their chemical waste into the creek, causing mass pollution. P&G also opened a factory along the Mill Creek, selling soap that was “light enough to float on water”. Slaughterhouses became an issue as well; they dumped the pig remains into the water. All the water flows down Mill Creek, then to the Ohio River and so on. Early pollution lead to difficulties down the line. It hurt wildlife, plants and even humans. It could make humans and animals sick if they were to drink the water. The Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act were passed in 1972. These acts helped stop a lot of pollution from going into the Mill Creek. Although it stopped some of the pollution from getting into the…
