Strauss and Dr. Nemur played an extremely large part in the tragedy. They used Charlie as an experiment; they did not truly care about his health! They had used him to the largest advantage- that much that could have cost him his life. The surgery had not worked on most of the lab mice that the doctors had worked on; Charlie was the first human to ever receive the surgery. If it did not work with mice, why would it possibly work on a human? The doctors knew that the surgery would more than likely not succeed, as well. They, along with Miss Kinnian (who, in addition, happened to know the same), did not inform Charlie on the possible failure included in the surgery. Their pretentious auras caused them to become ignorant and selfish. Charlie, as a mastermind, came to realize about the surgery; how it would be a…

The son, Charlie, tells his story about having an extra hour and a half between trains and wants to see his father. After extending a written invitation to his father, his father’s secretary responded and confirmed the reunion. The fact that his secretary responded tells us that, after not seeing his son for three years, he wasn’t overly exhilarated about seeing him. We can assume that he didn’t have ‘time’ to personally respond to his estranged son. But nevertheless, he agreed to meet. Seeing his father coming through the crowd, Charlie “felt that he was my father, my flesh and blood, my future and my doom” (Cheever…

This is the case for Charlie Kilsworth. Having been raised without a father figure and growing up with a lunatic woman of a mother, Charlie’s life is changed when a letter from Eleanor Hess, Lily’s dear old friend, arrives. Eleanor’s letter answers his biggest life question of who his father is. Eleanor writes in her letter: “My dear Charlie… I know who your father was. Your father was my husband - Karl. Karl Hess. Your name is Hess - if you want it” (476). The words “I know who your father was” show that although she denies knowing his father before in their earlier conversations, she is lying. While reading the letter, Charlie states “I turned the page. My eyes hurt. I was afraid” (476). The words “I was afraid” show how Charlie is affected by this turn of events. Eventually, Charlie accepts his fate and learns about his biological father, Karl Hess, who was a Junior Officer in the Imperial German Army. (477) Time passes and by 1940, Charlie welcomes Alexandra back in to his life and re-marries her (489). By 1944, Alexandra gives birth to a baby girl, whose name is Emma (490). By this time, Charlie gains his confidence and is able to raise a…
