In the play Macbeth, the character Macbeth is seen as a loyal warrior. In Act one scene 4, Macbeth is very friendly with King Duncan. "performing my duty to you is reward enough. Your highness' only obligation is to accept our services. By protecting you, we carry out our responsibility to the throne, the country and your children" pg 19. Macbeth explains that he was doing the duties of a warrior by doing everything he can to protect country. This shows his loyalty to his king, his people and Scotland. He is also very courageous and confident. In act one, scene 2, Rosse describes the battlefield and how he slew the traitorous Macdonwald. "Then Macbeth fearlessly confronted him head-on and matched him blow for blow in single combat -- until he finally gave in -- and victory was ours." pg 11. This shows that Macbeth is confident in the battlefield and that he is determined to fight. It also shows what other characters see in Macbeth and the king later surprises Macbeth with the throne of Cawdor.
Negative
Ambition is presented as dangerous quality. It has caused the downfall for Macbeth and triggered many deaths in the play. In act 3, scene 1, he decides to kill his best friend, Banquo so he can stay king. To be king is nothing. To stay king... that's what matters. My fear of Banquo runs deeps. It's his natural nobility that’s so threatening .” pg 51. Macbeth has killed Duncan to make himself king of Scotland, but he fears that it will be all for nothing if in the long run if Banquo's descendant rather than his own are destined to wear the crown. So he hires assassins to murder Banquo and tries to murder Fleance, in effort to destroy the family that someday will take his place on the throne.
