Horse Slaughter Speech Analysis
I went the first day, so I don’t have a recording to look at. Even though I cannot see my speech I still realized some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of my weaknesses consisted of: bad transition words, sounding shaky within the introduction, and time. My strengths consisted of: good movement, good tone, good statistics, and good eye contact. To start off my introduction I was very nervous, and I don’t know for sure, but I think the audience could tell. My transition into my first main point was not the best, but once I was in my first main point I was able to settle and really stroll through the rest of my speech. Within my speech I was able to incorporate many statistics to make my point why horse slaughter is needed although I am still

I think the speech I connected with the most in the opening ceremony was the main speech given by Dr. Marie LePage. It was not the whole speech, just one paragraph. Doctor LePage said that even though she had all this expertise in her field, sometimes she had this doubt that she belonged there with her colleagues, or even that she did not know she was doing. I missed a large portion of the next part of the speech because I was stuck ruminating on this confession of Dr. LePage. I had been struggling with much the same thoughts in my art courses. I am not new to the art world, I have taken many art classes in high school and a lot of after school activities, so I have a healthy understanding for my college level of art, but still, in my art courses I feel like I am faking being good at art or I don’t know what I’m doing.…

I believe that when someone is up front making a presentation, it is very important that people are able to hear you talk. I know I have a loud voice, and when I do public speaking, I have no problem with people being able to hear me. Another strength that I have is being animated. What I mean by this is being able to change my voice when needed and using my hands to try and make a point when needed. This is important because it keeps the audience listening and shows that I am trying to make my speech interesting. The last thing I would think is a strength that I have is the ability to make constant eye contact with my audience. This is also very important because keeping good eye contact tells the audience that you know what you are talking about and have confidence in your…

As stated before, the previous ban on horse slaughter in America expired in 2011 under President Obama. This ban made the slaughtering of horses in America illegal, however it still allowed horses to be shipped overseas to foreign countries to be slaughtered. This ban was never removed, it just simply expired. In 2015 a new bill to ban horse slaughter was introduced to congress. This bill is called The Safeguard American Food Exports Act, or (SAFE). This act would alter many acts such as the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act, making all horse parts unsafe. This act in addition would also outlaw the export of U.S. horses and horse meat bound for slaughter and human consumption. Horse meat is most popular in France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan.…

The horse is a highly respected animal in United States culture. It has been worshipped and paid tribute to through art, books (Misty of Chincoteague, Black Stallion), movies (Black Beauty, Spirit), and television shows (Mr. Ed). The horse industry is huge in the United States, encompassing everything from rodeos and racing to horses owned for purely pleasure. There have been statues erected of famous racehorses, as well as museums devoted entirely to equines. "Horse culture" is a huge part of American culture. The slaughter of horses for human consumption does not seem to fit into that culture. However, despite initial reservations, many Americans may agree that the slaughter of horses is better than alternatives.…

They are every little girl’s dream and every cowboy’s most reliable companion. Over the past 500 years they have served as weapons, transportation, recreation and pets. Horses were first brought to America in the early 1500s by Hernando Cortez; before that no Native had ever seen this four legged creature. From being used to fight off natives, to being tied to a wheel at a carnival and ridden by little kids, the horse has definitely evolved to suit the needs of the ever so changing America.…

During this persuasive speech, I once again started out slow (meaning during the introduction), but it eventually progressed and was much more easier to understand compared to the Informal Speech I had previously given. As soon as I had gotten more comfortable, it started to flow much better. My transitions between paragraphs made it clearer for my audience to follow. My points used were difficult to come by, but the goal of the speech to persuade my audience was still there and was still effective. If the points were more clear, the speech would have been better than it allegedly turned out. I do not have much strengths during my speeches, but what I can do to get better is to think of what I am going to say during my speech with the help…

Are horse slaughter houses humane? The term “horse slaughter” refers exclusively to the killing and processing of horses for human consumption. When looking up synonyms from the online source thesaurus.com for the word “slaughter,” words like murder, bloodbath, and destruction come up. Horse slaughter is not humane euthanasia. While “euthanasia” is defined as a gentle, painless death provided in order to prevent suffering, slaughter is a brutal and terrifying end for horses. Although there are no legal slaughter houses in the United States, American horses are being trucked over the borders to Mexico and Canada to be taken to open slaughterhouses; that is only part of the issue. The other issue is that hundred thousands of horses are taken across the border each year because of uneducated horse breeders and horse owners. By educating owners about proper rehoming and expanding adoption, horses can be given a long happy life they deserve. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) documented that, “92.3% of horses sent to slaughter are in good condition and are able to live out a productive life.”…

All through American history, horses have been by our side. They were our transportation, an advantage in war, ways to herd cattle for food, and our family. To thousands and thousands of people in the U.S, these beautiful animals are still family, or means of money. Whether people are herding cattle, barrel racing, jumping, teaching people to ride, or running a summer camp, whatever the case may be, all these animals do is what we ask of them. Humans are repaying them with cruel deaths. Horse slaughter should be illegal in the U.S. Horses should not be killed for human consumption in the United States until there is funding for proper inspection of the meat, and if there is to be proper funding for slaughter houses, there needs to be a more humane way to kill the animals, the punishment for black market horse slaughter should be equal to that of a murderer.…

In chapter 50 of the Speak With Courage textbook I learned to Set a goal, and then set out to achieve that goal. Going right along with this I also learned that on the day you speak, as the person you are, with the skills, knowledge, and aptitudes you possess, do the best you can and let it go. Personally, I often become overwhelmed that people will not like my speech because I am not the most talented or gifted student at strategically and efficiently expressing myself. Other times I feel like I am competing with my sister for the best speech performance. After reading these tremendous chapters in the Speak With Courage textbook I feel a renewed sense of motivation to not compare myself to others. I also find it helpful to go into each speech…

My fellow student Chris gave a well-organized and coherently structured speech that followed the guidelines imparted to us in our textbooks. The use of vivid connectives and transitional sentences enabled his speech to flow rather smoothly. Overall he was very successful in conveying his message on smartphones to the audience. Like many of my other classmates, the only problems I picked up on were not in content of the oratory but in rapidity and articulacy – two things than can be attributed to presentation-day jitters.…

The first thing that I noticed in my introduction is that I need a better attention grabber. It was good, but there is definitely a better way to get the audience’s attention. The biggest thing in my speech that I noticed the most was the eye contact. I tend to look down at my notecards a lot. I review my speech over and over again before I give it, and almost memorize it, but it is my worst fear to speak in front of people so that is why I look down at my cards so much. Also, I have my cards too close to my face. The second thing that caught my attention while watching myself was that I need to have more gestures with my hands. Having a little bit more mobility with my hands will put more emphasis on the things that I am trying to say to the audience. The power point that I made was simple, but I feel like it got the points across and corresponded with my speech. I thought my tone throughout the speech was good. I feel like my tone of voice is very personable with the audience and not too soft or loud. Another thing that I thought I did well was pausing. I let my information sink in with the audience with a pause. I tend to use a lot of head movement when I’m speaking, and it is distracting to the audience. I used some humor in my speech by giving funny pictures and saying some things in my speech that made the audience laugh. I gave some time to let the humor set in with a pause and then proceeded to go on with my speech, so I thought that I used humor in my speech pretty well. My speech needs to be more conversational. When I watched myself speak, it seemed like I was reading it a little bit. With a more conversational way of speaking, you can attach yourself to the audience rather than reading your speech. Saying that, when I was speaking I was standing with good posture and speaking with a good tone. Even though I may have not been speaking conversationally, I think that my posture made up for it a…

Public speaking is an area I feared for several years. My biggest drawback when it comes to public speaking is my lack of confidence. The session helped me realize that it is okay to be nervous, actually it is extremely common. Lacking confidence is something I struggle with regarding leadership as well.
