1. What kinds of applications are described here? What business functions do they support? How do they improve operational efficiency and decision making?

The applications defined in this case are e-mail, calendar and contacts from Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. In addition, there are some new software applications: hospital’s MEDITECH electronic medical records system, Epocrates Essentials and ChainLinq Mobile.
The businesses functions of these applications are assisting employees accomplish their work in ease and help them fix complexity of any work required. The e-mail application keeps doctors, other employees and patients in touch at any time. MEDITECH helps seek any information of medical records or results around the clock and wherever

Mobile digital devices have helped companies solve these two business problems by keeping their employees connected 24/7 via e-mails or customized applications designed for each business criteria, as stated in the case, Doylestown Hospital using specialized applications to manage the information of thousands of patients, and help doctors analyze medical results. And in case of emergency, the hospital can contact the doctors quickly. Another field of business mentioned, D.W. Morgan, headquartered in Pleasanton, California, serves as a supply chain consultant and transportation and logistics service provider to companies, uses ChainLinq Mobile for updating the information of shipping and tracking the positions of delivery to help the company control their operations easily and efficiently; even though some problems would occur in the shipping process, the company can also track the cargo and fix any problem immediately. The last example raised in the case was TCHO’s use of iPhone apps to control all the chocolate-making machines without having physical incidence, as well as monitoring the FlaborLab and keeping track of how is it going on …show more content…
It is capable of managing jobs with ease and having a close eye on the manufacturing processes as well as keeping employees in contact all day long. Doylestown Hospital uses iPhone to connect doctors and patients all the time. The hospital can get in touch with doctors quickly when something must to be solved immediately. Also the doctors can handle the information of patients and the lab results correctly. Because they own iPhone, they don’t have to sit in their office all the time and they needn’t worry about the condition of the patients. As D.W. Morgan, they use mobile digital devices to keep tracking on their boxes, and record the information of each box for their positions and delivery. It makes their work easy and keeps all the information in time. Also for TCHO, Owner Timothy Childs uses iPhone in industry which can control the machine for recording the time and temperature without employees looking around the machine. So we can see that iPhone is changing the way of industry and makes customers and suppliers closer to finishing the trades
