For many people a job interview is one of the most stressful and exiting events in their professional life. Because of the importance they have for individual career development, the success seems to have great importance for the applicant.
To describe the process of preparation we can differ between three major stages: the first and probably the most essential part for the preparation for an interview is the “preparation” itself.
This first element starts with the psychological acceptance of the interview. It sounds pretty obvious, but many applicants fail in their interview not because of a lack in knowledge but for sake of their mental rejection. The process of psychological acceptance includes the handling of emotions as well as the rhetorical preparation for any unexpected situation.
The second element of successful preparation is the specialized knowledge about the employer {most often the company (history, financial figures and operations)}. Although the study about the company may seem very important, the knowledge about your own application (e.g. CV, recommendation later, work experience) should be ensured. One could say that there is nothing, which is more embarrassing than a lack of knowledge about individual details. Furthermore, the demonstration of personal skills such as professional-/subject related knowledge and personal abilities is to most important part for convincing the possible employer.
The last but not least important element could be called the management of soft skills. For instance, the applicant should be dressed according to a standard, which fits the company’s requirements. Moreover, politeness and accurate behavior are considered to be the most significant part of successful interviews. However, many possible employees convince with both: subject related knowledge and personal skill, but the soft skills make the small but decisive difference.
