Many people probably noticed differences in the character's behavior between the movie and book but I found many more similarities. In both, Sherlock Holmes is observant, focused, and arrogant. He notices many details about other characters that neither Mortimer nor Watson notice. Holmes shows he is focused because he is so set on solving the cases he is given and he rarely gets side-tracked.
Sherlock Holmes appears arrogant in both because he never lets Dr. Watson think he is smarter. Sherlock Holmes makes it known that he is above Watson which makes him very arrogant. Secondly, Mr. Jack Stapleton is mischievous in both the book and movie. Jack and Beryl are very close to each other. Mr. Stapletons reaction to Sir Henry’s marriage proposal was suspicious to me. His explanation that he's too attached to his sister to let her get married isn't very convincing. Lastly, Dr. James Mortimer loves to study skulls. In the movie and the book he asked to feel the back of Sherlock’s head because he wanted to view the difference between his skull to the average person's. Similarities definitely outnumbered the differences when it came to characters in both the movie and book but other people could have seen that differently than I did. Although some people may have recognized more similarities in the setting of the book and the movie, I did not see that. I envisioned more differences between the two. In the movie, the moor appeared to be rocky and covered in dirt, while in the book, I saw the moor as being very grassy and hilly. Additionally, Baskerville Hall, in the movie, looked more like a castle, but in the book, I imagined it as more of a mansion. Lastly, in my mind, the Grimpen Mire looked flat, grassy, and dark. However, in the movie it was very muddy and foggy. Ultimately, I found more differences than similarities in the setting. Relating the events in the book to the movie, I found many differences along with many similarities. In the book, Watson goes alone to the hut. But, in the movie, Watson isn’t alone. Dr. James Mortimer is in the hut with him. Another difference I noticed from the book was when Watson goes to question Laura Lyons about her involvement with Sir Charles, it is just the two of them. But in the movie, Sherlock Holmes is with them. Mr. Stapleton is not who he says he is. But how Sherlock figured that out, is different in the book then in the movie. In the book, Holmes finds Stapleton because he was a schoolmaster. However, in the movie, Holmes finds Stapleton because he named a butterfly. At last, there are some similarities among the book and movie. In both, Sir Charles dies, Dr. Mortimer loses his boots, a woman sobbing is heard late at night, a letter given to Holmes, Stapleton ties up his wife and many more. Therefore, I believe that as it relates to the events, there is a balance between similarities and differences. After reading the book and watching the movie, I found many similarities and differences between them. Characters, setting, and events all had differences and similarities from the book to the movie.
