The Effect of Hourly Rounds on Patient Satistifaction in Hospitalized Adult Patients

1. “Hourly rounding is a new, proactive approach to organizing nursing care that has garnered positive results; its focus on patient-centered care has led to notably improved patient satisfaction scores” (Ford, 2010, p. 188). Hourly rounding acts as a “proactive approach to anticipated needs” and “increases patient satisfaction, because patients perceive their needs are being met in a timely manner” (Ulanimo and Ligotti, 2011,p.1). The purpose of my evidenced based practice project was to examine evidence that supports the effectiveness of hourly rounding on patient satisfaction in hospitalized inpatient adults by answering the following PICOT question: For inpatient medical-surgical hospitalized patients over the age of 18, does the implementation of hourly nursing rounds versus having no hourly nursing rounds improve patient satisfaction

AHRQ (2015) goal is to “produce evidence to make healthcare safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable and affordable and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the evidenced is understood and used. My role as a graduate prepared nurse in relation to the AHRQ agenda is to participate in the research process so that the most up to date evidence based practices are implemented in my personal practice and so that I can provide the most quality, cost-effective and safe care to my patients. The AHRQ specifically relate to this EBP because hourly rounds are a cost-effective intervention that serves as a proactive way to prevent patient adverse events. AHRQ (2015) developed a scheduled rounding protocol as a fall precaution and ensure patient’s needs are met on a routine basis. Although it focuses on fall precaution as an outcome and not patient satisfaction, it showcases another way hourly rounds are proven to be an evidenced based practice within the healthcare

    The findings were presented objectively. Their findings presented that there were lower fall risks during the structured nursing rounds implementation period compared to the baseline that was taken (Tucker et al., 2011). However, the differences were not by a large amount. Also it was hypothesized that the structured nursing rounds would be continued after the study was completed, but this did not happen after the study was finished. Also it was founded that another hypothesis was not supported in the fact that fall rates was not higher among people who were at a higher risk for falls (Tucker et al., 2011).     “In today’s economy compassion fatigue can be very costly personally and professionally for nurses, and financially for institutions” (Lombardo & Eyre, 2011, para. 31). The patients that are being cared for are not receiving the best care from their disengaged nurse. This leads to decreased patient satisfaction scores and possibly an increase in mistakes.
