Rynah’s fiance, Klanor, tricked her into thinking he loved her when, in reality, it was all just a large scheme to acquire a very powerful crystal that could ultimately destroy their entire planet. Bitter and seeking revenge, Rynah happens along one of her grandfather’s most prized creations: a spaceship complete with a hyper-intelligent AI, Solaris, who has a seemingly flawed, master plan up her computerized sleeve. To Rynah’s confusion and slight dismay, Solaris proceeds to extract four humans from their original, quite contrasting, timelines with hopes that they will assist Rynah in her quest for vengeance.…

To Where We Belong: Losing and Finding Home Conventional wisdom has it that home is an individual’s place of residence, typically with four walls and a roof. However, in her novel, Crescent, Diana Abu-Jaber draws light to the idea that home is not where one is from, but rather where one belongs. And sometimes, that sense of belonging associated with home cannot be found caged within four walls, but rather, is found in another individual. Abu-Jaber depicts this thought through Sirine’s continuous struggle to where she belonged, and how her restlessness was alleviated in Han’s presence. Similarly, Boniface expresses the confliction that comes with losing and finding home in his song “I Will Not Return as a Tourist.”…

A tiny evil, demanding, and annoying child who has everyone in the neighborhood wrapped around her pinky is no angel child. Cora, seemingly innocent young girl found in Crane’s short story, assumes a de facto position of authority in her family’s home. The trouble further involves her keen ability to instigate conflict and persuade other children to take part. Her persona reverses, however, when she approaches her parents reflecting the very picture of angelic innocence. The parents, although somewhat naïve, begin to see through the veneer of her saccharine smile, and their development as characters, as well as her own, reveals a minor theme in the story.…

The Company of Wolves by Angela Carter at first glance appears to be a darker spin off of the childhood tale of Little Red Riding Hood before delving into the deeper details of the story. The story begins with a long introduction describing the dull, fearful town and its wolves. Carter takes great care in describing the wolves and instilling fear in her readers with intricate descriptions of the wolves and their characteristics. One of the beginning lines, and one of my peers favorite lines from the story discussed in class, describes the wolves’ scary features by “the eyes of the wolves shine like candle flames, yellowish, reddish, but that is because the pupils of their eyes fatten on darkness and catch the light from your lantern to flash…
