they blocked out the sun or when a missile that was sent off into one of the overlords ship was observed.
I think that Clarke depicted the Overlords as devils based on the way that the Overlords nonviolently took control over the earth. For example in the Christian bible the devil in sense manipulates and tricks people into doing things that he wants them to do. Like Adam and Eve where the devil tricked Eve into convincing Adam that the forbidden fruit could be eaten without consequence which was not the case. The overlords did similar things that the Christian version of the devil would do. I think he also wrote the book this way to show how religion can manipulate people into believing or doing things without any violence but still getting persons to do what they want them do. I think the reason why Clarke wrote the book in this manner is basically to show that without violence, poverty etc. The only thing that would be left to do is to accumulate knowledge
The two main religious imagings that I saw in the book were Christianity and Buddhism. The purpose of the christen religion in the book was to show the devilish side of the overlords the Buddhism was to show the assentation the move on to something new of the final generation of children to the overmind.
