In "They Came Before Columbus", Ivan Van Sertima stated that American cotton has an African ancestor. With this being said, the transferral of plants from one region to the other is somewhat similar as the migration of humans from one geographical area to another. The first plants originated in Africa, which explains the ancestral view of this situation. Just like it is believed that humans started from one general area, so did plants, and just like humans, plants traveled to different parts of the world. In this instance, the cotton was moved to the western hemisphere, but was originally from the Eastern hemisphere which provides evidence that a plant such as cotton has African ancestors.…

In the book, They Came before Columbus is a must read for anyone seeking knowledge about the humiliation and ridicule of blacks by Ivan Van Sertima highlighted the tainted lies being taught to us by the Western world in order to justify their crimes of slavery and colonialism. In conclusion, black history has always been important, but never regarded as such. The education system needs to begin teaching black history the same time it begins to teach white. Although, oppression and triumph are a part of our history, black history does not begin in America. In Keisha Bentley-Edwards article, Black History Month: Change how we teach Black History, she acknowledges that black children need to know much more about who they are. “When the telling or teaching of black history begins with slavery, it ignores their humanity now, just as their humanity was denied in the past.” (Bentley-Edwards 3) Black children face enough adversity in the real world, so why not alleviate the burden by teaching them that their history does…

Yes, what Columbus and his follower did to the Indians is definitely unacceptable. I too, did not know the true story behind Columbus until now, which is why I raised this question. I think Columbus Day is celebrated to teach the kids some history. However, in reality, to most people it is just a holiday, a day off from work and school. I think that teachers should emphasized to the students that it is more than just a holiday, but a day where slavery and massive murdering begins.…

As early as the 1920s, Leo Weiner, the originator of the thoughts that Africans made the journey before Columbus, gave evidence to support his ideas. In that specific year, he published, Africa and the Discovery of the Americas, making his points clear to the world. These beliefs and findings were appreciated by few but ignored by many. Eventually, historians have come to develop upon them. Ivan Sertima, They came before Columbus (1972), wrote extensively on modern discoveries and because of him the world had a new opinion of the thought. It is needless to say, that some historians simply ignored it, but others saw it as a challenge to go against their findings. One historian Michael Coe, author of such historic piece as the Mayas, and many other aspects of Pre and Post Columbian times, offered much evidences to the cause.…
