How Did Abraham Lincoln Led Our Nation
Abraham Lincoln’s words and deeds have made him a very important person in
American History. Have you ever wandered the journey that Abraham Lincoln took to become a man that led our nation? Lincoln did not have an easy childhood. He faced many challenges. Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. At only nine years old, Lincoln lost his mother, Nancy. She had died from a disease called milk sickness. Two of Nancy’s relatives also died from this terrible disease. Lincoln had to learn to work hard at an early age. When he was only seven years old, his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana. Lincoln had many jobs leading up to his political career. He worked as a laborer, soldier, and postman. He even worked and managed a general store. Abe was also self-educated. He taught himself how to read and write. Lincoln’s stepmom, Sally, saw that he loved to learn. Sally even said, “He read all the books he could lay his hands on.”
In 1832, Lincoln ran for the Illinois State Legislature and lost, but got elected as officer of militia in the Black Hawk War. Two years later, he ran for Illinois State Legislature again, and easily won. Then in 1846, Lincoln gets elected into U.S. Congress and moves to Washington D.C.
Another thing Lincoln did to get noticed in the political world was campaigning with other presidents. In 1840, Lincoln campaigned for Whig William Henry Harrison. Then in 1844, Lincoln campaigned for Henry Clay, who lost the election. He also campaigned for Zachary Taylor. After Taylor lost the election, Lincoln entered into his second and final session of congress. In 1849, Lincoln planned to introduce a bill to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia with payment in their owners. After Lincoln was finished with his term at Congress, he went home to Illinois so he could practice
