In the legislature he wrote declarations that slavery was “founded on both injustice and bad policy.” It was his kindness, honesty and self-betterment …show more content…
that earned the respect from the reputable people and the communities in which he did business and always paid his debts. In,1858, Lincoln was encouraged to run for Senate.
His opening speech began: “A house divided against itself cannot stand, I believe this government cannot endure a half slave and half free.” He lost the election for senate but went on to become president, First in 1860 and re-elected in 1864. In both terms Lincoln was faced with the states seceding from the Union, his desire to end slavery, and then the Civil War. His political attributes of keeping the issue of slavery in the forefront, along with a divided union, his repeal of a section of the Missouri Compromise, the Emancipation Proclamation and his ideals of democracy, justice, fairness, the understanding of government funds appropriation and the knowledge of politics and the players allowed President Lincoln to strategically accomplish what was best for the people and the
Union. President Lincoln’s Final Inaugural Address based on his proclamation of 1863, Reconstruction Policy, proposing to offer the secessionists amnesty to all who would take an oath of allegiance, reestablish a loyal democratic government and abolish slavery would be welcomed to full status in the Union. This would be his last address and public utterance on April 11, 1865. How might Reconstruction have been different if Lincoln had lived? I would have to conclude that if Lincoln had lived after abolishing slavery and enacting the right to vote, he would have continued with land ownership, education and jobs possibly avoiding segregation of blacks and whites in schools, on buses or in businesses, aleviating the racial tension that led to violence and protest. Through corporations and industry he could have reunited the North and South, overcome anamosity with prosperity. His disillusionment with politics and experience with the negative verbage about the candidates can sway voters, may have allowed Lincoln to reduce the corruption in government, by reforming the method of elections. Abraham Lincoln was a self taught, educated lawyer who was respected by his peers, had knowledge and understanding of government, politicians and how to manipulate without deviating from the Declaration of Independence, his own beliefs of fair and equal justice for the people by the people. Through his determination and disipline he was a President of action and looked upon as representative of America and the ideals of democracy at its best.
