When I was deciding on a character, right away I chose Athena. I chose Athena because I believe she is the most interesting (besides Odysseus) character in the book. Speaking of Athena, Athena is a very important character in the first few chapter of the Odyssey. She is the one who puts Odysseus's son on the path to find Odysseus and learn what is his faith. She did this by showing up to Odysseus’s house in human form and convincing Telemakhos to call all of his mothers suitors in front of the gods and try to convince them to leave. When that didn't work “Athena was nearby and came to him, putting on Mentor’s figure and his tone,” and told him that she will find him a boat She told him to sneak out of the house and go down to the docks to…

Athena’s role as the institutor in The Odyssey is significant because the goddess begins to change Telemachus’s behavior and thoughts very dramatically. She implores Telemachus to mature into an adult and a chain reaction followed. This led Telemachus in search of his long-lost father, and eventually led to Odysseus’s return. To begin this process, Athena set off to Ithaca, disguising herself as Mentes, an old friend of Odysseus. Then she went straight to the prince Telemachus in the palace. After feasting in her guest’s house, Athena advises Telemachus to “not cling to [his] boyhood any longer. It’s time [he was] a man”(Homer 87). Athena wants Telemachus to take some responsibility and put an end to the suitors’ endless game. She wants Telemachus…

Thoughtful Hera sent Hermes to find someone worthy enough for this mission. He contacted his long lost cousin Casus. Casus was a God that everyone over-looked. Once Casus and Hermes arrived, Zeus’ exact words to Casus were, “Now you may not know us, and I know you have no idea why you are here, but obviously the light is gone. It was stolen from us by Hades and his Furies. I need you to travel down to the underworld and steal it back from him. Will you be able to complete this task?” Casus hadn’t done anything like it before, but he answered, “Yes, I’ll try my best to complete it.” Zeus then pulls out a sword, a flute, and a small box. “Here, these are…

When one ponders the Greek mythology and literature, powerful images invariably come to mind. One relives the heroes’ struggles against innumerable odds, their battles against magical monsters, and the gods’ periodic intervention in mortal affairs. Yet, a common and often essential portion of a heroic epic is the hero’s consultation with an oracle or divinity. This prophecy is usually critical to the plot line, and also to the well being of the main characters. Could Priam have survived in the Achaean camp if not at the gods’ instruction (200-201)? Could the Argos have run the gauntlet of the Prowling Rocks if not for the gods’ advice of using a sacrificial bird (349).…

The myth of Pallas Athena inspired many artists to create marvelous pieces of art. Athena’s myth is about how you can’t run away from your problems and not to be so self-centered. For when Zeus swallowed Metis, his intension was to not have his two children born to him because they were going to defeat him. Zeus didn’t know that one way or another; Athena was going to be born. This myth inspired Jacopo Tintoretto to create a beautiful painting called Athena and Arachne. Although Tintoretto faced many problems, the outcome of his painting, Athena and Arachne is unlike any other.…

When the time came for Athena to be born, the smith god, Hephaistos, opened Zeus' head with an axe, and Athena stepped out, in full armor.
