Gates went to Harvard for a year and then later transferred to Honeywell where Paul Allen was attending college. A new computer system came out called the MITS Altair 8800. Gates and Allen used this as an opportunity to start their own computer software company called Microsoft. Bill Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft in 1975. They believed computers would be beneficial at homes and in work offices. Therefore, they began developing a software for personal computers. This BASIC software they created was popular with computer hobbyists. The computer hobbyists were distributing the software to their friends and many more people. Gates found out that only ten percent of people who have the network actually paid for it. Gates saw this distribution as stealing. In February of 1976, he wrote a letter to computer hobbyists saying that if the software keeps getting distributed, he would shut it down and no one could use it.
