Mexico won their independence, that meant that they had instant command of California, by they only started to exert control in 1825. José María de Echeandía was the name of the new governor, representing the republicans he liberated the mestizo to the frontier. But that does not meant that United States ( California ) was happy with it, actually they had a lot of ambition on getting back their territory.
The spanish and their culture did not last a lot at the time, because Echeandía made a law that declared all spanish to be "illegal immigrants" and ordered to leave the new country of Mexico. And while time was passing, no spanish were located in California and their culture was disappearing, making the mexican culture predominate. At the time, mexico had a giant territory, actually, in the mid-nineteenth century, Mexico was the second largest country in the world. So, how could this giant territory got lost?
