I find it interesting that we were raised up to think that Columbus was this great man who found America in 1492. After reading this first chapter we learn that he was a greedy cold blooded lying killer, he killed thousands of people and lied about what he was doing. He used the innocents of the Arawaks and basically wrote their death certificates. By tricking them into showing their gold and then taking all their people back to Spain was cattle. If it wasn’t the Columbus’s men killing and enslaving them it would be the diseases that they brought with them from the old world that surely exterminated the Arawak people (Burnett III).…

Who was the navigator, colonizer, and explorer extraordinaire that fearlessly journeyed the seas and “discovered” the great “New World”? It was Christopher Columbus, of course! However, in reality, Columbus didn’t actually discover the Americas. Rather, he traveled to an already-inhabited land with not-so-civilized inhabitants, and expropriated both the land, and the indigenous people. By doing this, he brought settlers from Europe, who helped take over the land, causing plenty of suffering and havoc, but also completing the map and transforming life for people around the world. Some believe he was a hero, and some believe he was a monster. However, one man’s gain is another’s loss in most cases. Columbus brought change, both good and bad, through his actions, which defined his character and personality.…

Christopher Columbus is one of the most well known names in the western world because of what he accomplished during his lifetime. He was an explorer, a navigator, and a colonizer and, with his unrelenting determination, he would be the man to “discover” the New World. Although he thought that he found India and a better route to Asia rather than sailing around the southern tip of Africa, he had really stumbled upon the Americas. While he may have had the actual location wrong, his accidental discovery has effectively changed the timeline of human existence greatly, and has helped shape the world as we know it into what it is today.…

Many Americans view Columbus as a heroic figure whom is celebrated every year. Children look up to him, as an amazing person for being able to “discover” America and citizens are able to spend a whole day off from work/school to reflect on his greatness. However, this greatness should in no way be glorified, because it is absurd to call Columbus a hero. Columbus had taken credit for things that he didn’t accomplish, brutally abused Native Americans and caused slave trade, which led to mistreatment of Native Americans for years to come. I strongly believe that Columbus day should not be celebrated because of the torture, slavery, and lying that was caused by him.…
