WWI was a key event for the women’s suffrage movement as many men left jobs vacant which were filled by women who were able to display women’s capabilities and importance to America. The effectiveness of these women was clear and some years after the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, which again displayed a theme of gradual change within civil rights as this was more than 10 years after the war. However, issues clearly still persisted for women, especially women of color as the civil rights movement was still in effect. This change absolutely took the state of freedom closer to arms reach for women. Just as the Declaration of Independence suggests, America was founded on “freedom”, but during the Reconstruction Era and the Roaring Twenties, freedom was certainly not a word that would be used in the description of America unless you were a white male. The United States clearly was not designed for everyone to be completely equal and fair as life is not equal and fair, but it was supposed to grant every American with equal rights that were based on the idea of
