In 1947 India finally reached independence under the lead of a small man called Gandhi. The unusual thing was that Gandhi and his followers not once raised their weapons against the British authorities, and government. To make this happen Gandhi had to overcome the boundaries between the different social statuses. To achieve Independence, Gandhi and his friends made many sacrifices, such as Gandhi were ready to sacrifice his wife to achieve it.
Although Gandhi used many methods to reach his goals, but one of the strongest ones was satyagraha. Satyagraha means the force of the truth or the truth holders. Satya means “truth” and agraha means “holding firmly to”. Gandhi invented this method which is particularly known from the Salt March. On March 12,1930 Gandhi started the Salt March in Sabarmati Ashram which lies next to the city of Ahmedabad. At the beginning of the march Gandhi walked with only 78 people, but when he reached his final destination, the sea, he was already joined by millions of his followers. At the end of the march Gandhi proceeded to make salt, which was a sign to his other followers to do the same. All around the city of Dandi people continued to sell salt without paying any taxes even after Gandhi was arrested.
