As a child, O’Keeffe was interested in nature and becoming an artist. Her mother encouraged her to become and artist, and arranged lessons with an artist in the area. In 1902, her family moved to Virginia. O'Keeffe stayed in Wisconsin with her aunt to attend high school. In 1903 she moved to Virginia with the rest of her family.
