The connection of modern day Iraq to ancient Sumer is that Sumer was found in the southernmost part of the modern day Iraq. Sumer was considered as the civilization cradle. The name Sumer came from the north Mesopotamia language meaning the land of civilized kings. After the Amorites had conquered Mesopotamia, the Sumerians had to lose their separate identity and bequeath all their culture to their successors. As a result, the world was left with many cultural and technological contributions. Sumer also portrayed an actual example of an urban center with a high degree of economic and social diversity; an accurate reflection of modern Iraq (The Phoenix Learning Group Inc.).
