There was need for a new life in the cities of Europe because most were in the grotesquely style of Gothic architecture. It had “lacked proportion, order, and beauty”(Payne). Whereas the newly acquired architectural ideas and designs had high arches, long, strong pillars, domes, large doors (because they were churches and cathedrals), but most of all symmetry. Michelangelo had taken over a project that had been meant to be constructed for decades, designing Saint Peter's Basilica. He added some of his own ideas, “preserved much of what Bramante had planned but improved upon the design” buttresses with double columns and ribs. Michelangelo had made a clean polished building that was adored by all. He also made the Basilica dome so it could be seen through every vantage point. Lastly, in an alcove just inside the entryway of the Basilica stands the ever so famous, Pieta, which depicts Mary holding the crucified body of Jesus on her lap.
