Yeste, Domingo’s great friend, is the one known for making swords. Yeste was a good sword maker but he wasn’t the best. Domingo was. Whenever Yeste would get a job that was too difficult for him to complete he would go to Domingo, but no one would know that Domingo was truly the one who made the sword. The word got out that Domingo was a great swordmaker and soon a nobleman arrived at their doorstep. He had six fingers and asked for a sword that was as great at the Excalibur. It took Domingo a year to make the sword. One year of fretting, weeping and no sleep. When…
Spain, France, and England all chose a different plan with regards to the exploration of the New World. Each Country had their own values that reflected their methods of making the New World work to their benefit. All of the countries were driven by similar motives such as gold, silver, religion and the route to the East Indies. Settlers that crossed the Atlantic also took different approaches towards colonizing. For instance, France and Spain went to America as servants of the Crown.…

Upon becoming the joint monarchs of Castile and Aragon, one of the main challenges that Ferdinand and Isabella faced was to extend the crown's authority over the Iberian peninsula thus increasing the stability of the kingdom and power of the crown. This was a daunting task, especially given the power of grandees such as Mendoza and Carillo at the time. The Catholic kings had some considerable success in consolidating royal authority, but there were limitations on this success and compromises were made; especially in the kingdom of Aragon. This will largely be an essay on Castile, as Castile was the dominant body in Spain, but I will consider the substantial differences in the administration and other areas of Aragon which, arguably, meant that the monarchs were considerably less successful at consolidating their authority there.…

Both Spain and Portugal were eager to expand beyond the European continent by the early sixteenth century because of wealth flowing through Northern Europe and that they both had a poor management and weak home industries. In this competition for global power, Spain, rather than Portugal, laid claim to most of South America because Spain and England was stressed that Portugal would utilize its developing wealth to try to command them so they choose to take care of this issue by exploring the Americas to gain wealth. Granted, Spain had to fight for its conquests, but in battle after battle - such as the defeat of the Inca Empire in 1532 - the Spanish proved victorious. Proximate factors such as horses, superior technology, and diseases explain…

The arrival of the news of the fall of Edessa in 1144 triggered the call for a Second Crusade by St. Bernard in Europe (Kelly, 1957). Eleanor, now Queen, responded by offering “her thousands of vassals from Poitou and Aquitaine”; Eleanor would accompany her husband King Louis and it is also noted that along “with the queen came ‘many other ladies of quality’” (Kelly, 1957, p.45). Nicetas, a historian of the crusade, records on page 404 of his work that “in the army were women dressed as men, mounted on horses and armed with lance and battle axe… at the head of these was one in particular richly dressed with the name of [Eleanor]” however, these women are not believed to have fought in battle (as cited in Nicholson, Kelly, 1957, p.51) . Upon the arrival of Louis and Eleanor, they met up with Raymond of Antioch, Eleanor’s cousin whom she had not seen for ten years, and began discussing plans; the plans of the two men, however, conflicted and a disagreement arose between Louis and Eleanor who happened to prefer her uncle’s plan over her husband’s (Kelly, 1957). Eventually, after enraging her husband who then demanded that she set out for Jerusalem with him, Eleanor gives in and follows his plan over Raymond’s (Kelly, 1957). After this, Eleanor began to make plans to annul her marriage to Louis and in fact, journey home to Europe on separate ships; in 1152 the marriage between Eleanor and Louis is annulled (William of Newburg, n.d.). A marriage between Eleanor and the future king of England Henry takes place not long after, and Eleanor once again brought into power (Kelly, 1957). During the following years of their…
Queen Isabella of Castile was one of the most successful queens of the Early Modern European period. The role of women in society, especially as leaders was and has been seen as limited throughout history. However Isabella’s reign as a female leader was not limiting but rather successful as she was able to assert and have independent power thus breaking the gender norms of her society. Queen Isabella of Castile had to endure a civil war to secure her place on the throne, and though by marrying Ferdinand of Aragon, unifying the crowns, she alone helped Spain become a powerful kingdom through her grandiose political visions.…
