In college, students tend to change their majors because they do not really know what they want to do with their lives. In Siddhartha, Siddhartha changed his path in life many times. Hermann Hesse says to find meaning, a person needs to follow many paths and make mistakes like Siddhartha did; he made the decision to to go live with the Samanas, to go to the buddha, and to become a businessman, but none of those patches were for him. Siddhartha spent a time of his life with the Samanas to try to reach Nirvana. During his time with the Samanas he only wanted to do one thing, “Siddhartha had one single goal- to become empty, to become empty of thirst, desire, dreams, pleasure
and sorrow- to let the Self die.” (Hesse, 1951, p.14). This was an important part of the story because it explains the way he was trying to reach enlightenment on his path with the Samanas. He later discovered that this was not the best path for him. As he was deciding that he was going to leave the Samanas he said, “I have become distrustful of teachings and learning and that I have little faith in words that come from teachers.” (Hesse, 1951, p.22). After spending several years with the Samanas he didn’t feel that what they were teaching him was going to help him reach enlightenment; this causes him to to become distrustful of their teaching. As a result, Siddhartha left the Samanas to find another path to enlightenment. In conclusion, to find meaning, a person needs to follow many paths and make mistakes like Siddhartha did; he made the decision to to go live the Samanas, to go to the buddha, to become a businessman, but none of those paths were for him. This works for normal people too because they change their paths in life as well.
