1.The fact that Siddhartha goes into the forest and eventually becomes unconscious beside a river signifies his physical weakness due to fatigue and hunger. He didn’t have any purpose but had painful longing to shake off the confused dream and end this painful life.
2. The image that Hesse uses to show that Siddhartha is overcome by sadness and guilt are to reflect the terrible emptiness in his soul through the cold emptiness in the water. His practice of pronouncing Om inwardly made him conscious of Brahman and indestructibleness of life. He remembered he had forgotten and slept deeply and dreamless.

Siddhartha had struggled in vain with his Self, when he was a Brahmin and an ascetic. Too much knowledge had hindered him. He realized that the inward voice was right, that no teachings can bring him salvation that was why he had to go into the world and lose himself in power, women, money.
Chapter 9-The Ferryman
1. Siddhartha wanted to learn from the river like the ferryman and stayed with him. They both listened to the water silently, which was not just water to them but the voice of life, the voice of being, of perpetual becoming.
2. Siddhartha came to know about the illness of Gotama and remembered his path to salvation and also remembered the arrogant words he had uttered as a young man to Buddha. He felt he was not separated from Gotama although he could not accept his teachings. Kamala was bitten by a snake when she was on the pilgrimage to meet Buddha her son cried for help. When Vasudeva heard him, he brought Kamala and her son to his hut where Siddhartha was just lighting the fire. Siddhartha, on seeing the boy whose face reminded him of something and heart beat quickly.
3. Kamala died after getting bitten by a snake. Siddhartha closed her eye lids after she died he sat there a long time looking at her dead face. It was pale with tired wrinkles, shrunken lips and felt all this was so different from how she looked when she was young.
