In fact, a 2013 study showed that 83.8% of US households owned a computer, of that, 78.5% had a desktop/laptop and 63.6% had a handheld computer (phone, tablet). Our smartphones, laptops, and computers have managed to capture our attention with their flashy features and convenience. They stimulate dopamine releases in our brain, forcing us to crave their presence more and more. The popularity of the smartphone has increased so much that here in the year 2018, researchers have found that 77% of adults own a smartphone. The internet was developed during this time period, the first version of it being ARPAnet. DARPA, a division of the US Department of Defense responsible for creating and developing advanced technology for the US Military, was responsible for the creation of ARPAnet, the precursor of modern day internet. ARPAnet was developed to become a backup communication system in case the power lines and telephone systems were to somehow become ineffective, and sent its first signals between UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute. By 1969, a total of 4 computers were hooked up to ARPAnet. A breakthrough in internet development was made in the 1970s, when Vinton Cerf invented the IP or Internet Protocol, which globalized the internet at the time, thus making the number of computers connected to ARPAnet increase. Video games were also extensively progressive during this time period. Many major games were released to the public, these including: Galaxy Game in 1971, which was the first coin-operated video game, Computer Space, which was the first mass produced video game, pong, the 1st commercially successful coin-operated game, and Pac-man, which was released in 1980, becoming a pop-culture icon and earning $2 billion.
