It is worth noting that by the time Nazis were invading the Soviet Union, the national government, the military, the local governments, the economy were relatively disciplined (Kat︠s︡enelinboĭgen 223-224). Submissiveness and conformity had erased any form of originality, drive or initiative. For a period in his rule after eliminating land owners and other fascists, Stalin began eliminating generals that he suspected of being disloyal. Thus, when the war was brought to his corner, he had already he gained full control over the military (Riemer and Simon 129). The twist however, is that Stalin unlike Hitler was more willing to depend on the few Generals that remained for tactical advise (Riemer and Simon 130).
