In 1950, the Korean War started.
Kim-II-sung had tried to unify Korea through military force which ignited the War. This is said to be the most destructive event in Korean history. 3 years later, both sides signed the armistice that ended major hostilities in 1953. The DMZ, demilitarized zone, was also created at the same place that the border was before the war began. Through 1953-1970, Korea had attempted to create a Stalinist State. They had built Korea with the framework of Juche. The state had taken control of all private property and organizations. The state also took control of the media and restricted international
travel.
Later, Songbun was established which organized the Korean people into classes. The classes were organized based on the person’s “perceived loyalty to socialism and the regime”. The songbun class you are put into chooses which schools you can go to, where you can live, and jobs you can have. This is still going on today.
In the 1970s, Korea began to decline. They were losing allies and followed poor policies. The quality of life had depressed. Korea suffered an economic collapse. A military first policy was created and made the country even worse. The collapse then led to the social changes in North Korea. People then began to focus on themselves rather than the military during the famine.
Now, in the 2000s, North Korea has been going uphill and is now under rule of Kim Jung-un. Kim Jung-un was chosen from the bloodline and had a five-year election as he ran unopposed.
