Korea: one state or two? – Once a colony of Japan and divided into two occupation zones by the united states and the former soviet union in WW II. Then in 1950, came about a south and north korea. Then in 2000 the two governments (north and south) decided to let the familes who were broken because of the boundaries set, to reunite. Meanwhile, 1992, north and south korea were addmited to the united nations as separate countries.
China and Taiwan: one state or two? - China thinks of Taiwan as there own. While other governments think of them as two different states. The reason China thinks it is there land too is because in 1949 nationalist leaders fled there because of the civil war in the 1940s.
Western Sahara (Sahrawi republic) – Spain used to control this land until 1976 when they resigned. Then came the Mauritania’s to take over, but three years later the Morocoo’s took over. Now Spain takes over those two countries too.
Varying Size of States- The size of a state can be as small as Monaco (1.5 square miles) or as big as Russia (6.6 million square miles)
Development of the state concept- the concept of dividing the world into small independent states; prior to the 1800s.
Ancient and medieval states- The idea of dividing into small states originated from medieval times. It wasn't until the Europeans, when they thought of dividing into states was heard.
Ancient States- The first state to evolve was Mesopotamia and it was known as a city-state. Every now and again, one city-state would gain control over another. Meanwhile, Egypt emerged as an empire and controlled banks along the nile river.
