In this paper I will be discussing the characteristics of a modern nation-state, the European Union, and a couple of the foreign policies of the United States. By the end of this paper there should be an understanding of what makes a modern nation-state and also some examples of countries that are either a nation or state. To understand what a nation-state is, you must first understand what both a state and a nation truly are in today’s world. A state is an entity that is responsible for both the country and the country’s citizens. A state has predefined borders that lay out what land it controls and also has sovereignty to a ruling power. A nation is more of an idea as it reflects a culture of people having common factors amongst them that defines their country. When you combine the three elements that are between a state and a nation you get what we call a nation-state. So a modern nation-state has a defined territory that is sovereign and also has a culture that it reflects to the rest of the world that makes it unique. While there are many nation-states in the world there are also nations which are not states. One of these nations would be Quebec. While they are actually part of Canada they are now officially recognized as a nation. The House of Commons in Canada passed the motion to recognize Quebec as a nation inside of Canada in 2006. Quebec has a different culture than the rest of Canada. They are predominately a French speaking people and have various views that differ from the rest of Canada. It is this different type of common culture inside of the Quebec region that has caused Canada to recognize them as a nation inside of their country. (House passes motion recognizing Québécois as nation, 2006) There are also areas that are considered states but are not considered their own nation due to sovereignty to another country.
