The first justified reason the colonists had for declaring their independence from Britain was the unreasonable and unfair taxes that the British enforced directly on the colonists. George Grenville was noted in “Parliament Debates the Stamp Act” (1765), as saying “the stamp tax takes in a great degree its proportion from the riches of the people.” Since this tax came from the sale of all paper products, almost all colonists had to pay it. The tax covered almost everything from Wills to a deck of cards. The British imposed the tax this way to ensure that every single person would have to pay it because every single person had need for at least one of these products. There were very few that were exempt from the Stamp Act and those were the people that had no use for the products or swore off the paper products altogether. The colonists labored long, hard hours in all conditions to make their wages only for the British to take the largest portion of their pay. This left them with barely enough income left to provide for themselves and their family. Britain used these taxes to keep soldiers in America and to keep them in power.…

After the Townshend Duties were repealed (except for the tax on tea), colonists in Boston harassed the new board of customs commissioners to the point where the British government had to place four British troops inside the city. The British soldiers competed with colonists in many things, such as jobs. In 1770, a mob of dockworkers began to throw rocks at the guards at the customs house. Captain Thomas Preston lined up his men in front of the building for protection. In the confusion, five men were killed, among them Crispus Attucks. Colonists considered the Boston Massacre a symbol of British oppression and brutality. Americans were trying to expand and the oppression from the British angered them. Three years later, in 1773, colonists in Massachusetts protested against the British in the Boston Tea Party by dumping tea overboard. This was a result of the Tea Act. The Tea Act enraged merchants because they were cut out of the deal, meaning the company sold the tea directly to the colonists without a middleman (colonial merchants). When the British were informed about the Boston Tea Party, Lord North punished Boston by enforcing the Coercive Acts. The Coercive Acts closed the port of Boston, allowed trials to be transferred to other countries, amended the state charter, and quartered British troops in Boston at the colonists ' expense. This angered the colonists because they had to…

The tea prices ended up being even lower than those of the smugglers, prompting a group of colonists to dump 300 chests of tea in the Boston Harbor, known as The Boston Tea Party. Britain quickly responded by instituting the Intolerable Acts, which closed the Port of Boston, changed the Charter of Massachusetts, and instituted quartering of troops. The main focus of all these acts was taxation of the colonies by Britain, and the uniting call of the colonists was “no taxation without representation!” The subtler message was one of control and…
