Raleigh was a little unique in his pursuit of the Northwest Passage because unlike the rest of the explorers, he also wanted to colonize in North America. After asking for a patent to go to the New World for years, Elizabeth finally agreed and let him sail out on the sea. He got reports from scouts he sent out that there was a land to settle on the east coast of North America. In 1584, he found the area of nowadays North Carolina, and called it Virginia for the “Virgin Queen.” The colony he wanted to make there would be called Roanoke. The colony was getting extra supplies from Raleigh in England until the Spanish Armada interrupted his support ships. In 1590, when the supplies got there, the colony was completely wiped out already(Christopher). Christopher says “Although this lost colony was Ralegh’s last colonizing attempt in North America, his efforts paved the way for the establishment there of an English-speaking empire in the early seventeenth century.” After this attempt at a colony, Raleigh had his mind on different things instead of simply exploration. Since the death of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Raleigh got his charter to search South America for gold. His main objective though was to find the fabled city “El Dorado.” While searching for this imaginary place, he did find another very important land called Guiana, where present-day Venezuela is located(Christopher). His influence on other explorers grew tremendously after he died because he wrote all of the ventures he had down. Raleigh inspired many more men to follow in his footsteps which led to even more discovery. Finally, the stepbrother of Raleigh also played a huge impact on North America just like Walter.
