A canal is a large ditch that is filled with water. Canals were only a few feet deep, and the water levels could be raised to carry boats over certain obstacles with large dams. With steamboats carrying cargo down canals, the populations of the surrounding towns would skyrocket, and poor towns would become bustling cities. Traveling by canal was much more efficient than going on muddy roads, or even corduroy roads. This was beneficial to many people, as goods became much cheaper.
Not only was the distribution of goods made more efficient with the Industrial Revolution, but so was the creation of goods. One of these inventions was the mechanical reaper. A mechanical reaper was a device pulled by horses that cut and gathered crops. The mechanical reaper would harvest crops a lot faster than anyone could by hand. This invention allowed farmers to get more crops, thus creating more income.
Another invention that made the creation of goods more efficient was interchangeable parts. If a soldier’s gun broke during battle, the soldier would have to go to a gunsmith to replace the gun. With the introduction of interchangeable parts, the soldier would not have to replace the whole gun, they would only have to replace the part that was broken. Interchangeable parts allowed items to be quickly repaired, therefore creating more time for soldiers and other craftsman to stay
