Great Britain rule tried to outlaw outrageous religious rituals that resulted in deaths, such as the murderous religious ritual known as “Sati”. Sati is a brutal religious traditional ritual that consists of the widow jumping onto the fire burning her deceased husband’s body. The problem surrounding the ceremony is that not all women who participated would willingly do so. Jonathan Wholier elaborates, “I was horrified to see a traditional Sati in 1852, and I became central to its banning by the middle of the decade.” By banning this horrific tradition, the British are trying to save innocent Indian lives. Although some women may willingly participate, most will not and it is unjust to force them to. The ritual of Sati, “was practiced mostly by Hindu people, although apparently there is nothing written in Hindu scripture that either suggests or condones the custom”(Sati reading). The brutal practice was not a religious tradition, so the British were not banning a Hindu religious practice, but were just trying to help the Indian lives. The British had also aimed to ban India of the unfair caste system. This traditional way of life was said to be, “one of the worst economic catastrophes waiting to happen,” by Daniel Stone, who is an expert in his field. He earned his Ph.D. in Asian economics at Oxford University. By attempting to ban this system they allowed the Indian people to have their …show more content…
Samuel Hastings claimed, “We allowed them to attain better schooling, many even attend Oxford and Cambridge.” Britain built many new schools, which made it much easier for Indians to attend school and earn a better education. Sameer Archarya and Dadabhai Naoroji both studied at schools run by the British. This goes to show the increase in educational opportunities. India’s claims that Britain discontinued the teaching of Indian history are false. Indian history is still learned by students and an example can be seen in Sameer Archarya, one of India’s witnesses. Even though Sameer Achyarya stated in his affidavit “The British Colonial government has worked hard over the years to remove any notion of Indian culture and heritage from Indian schools,” Archarya still completed his Ph.D. in the history of the Mughal empire. The Mughal empire is an ancient Indian empire that ruled for about 300 years. This shows how Indian history is still taught within schools. “In 1835 English was established as the official language of India” (Fact or Fiction). The British introduced the Indians to English to unify their language for better communication. English also helped to modernize and better educate the Indian people. By exposing the Indian people to a new language, they are enhancing their cultural education. The new unified language helped the communication between the British and the Indians.
