They both had a belief in conquering groups of people either for power or independence. The Spanish fought in many wars that they desirably joined or started for power or independence. In 1511, Diego Velazquez embarked on an expedition to Cuba with all his Spanish soldiers. Hernan Cortes, on the other hand, stole 500 men and 11 ships and sailed to Mexico instead, setting his sights on overthrowing the Aztecs. This shows that Hernan Cortes was so compelled in conquering the Aztecs that he even risked his life to steal the 500 men away from Velazquez. He desired to overthrow specific groups of people due to them having some sort of weakness against him and his soldiers. Similarly, US fought many wars for independence and began improving their weaponry and other military based factors. Whenever people grow a desire to do something, they tend to act upon it and wanna do more with it. Just like what Christopher Kelly indicated in his famous book America Invades, “In the twenty-first century, the United States will, no doubt, face major new challenges to its power and influence around the world, and it will face new demands to fight in the name of justice and freedom.” Even after invading Panama, USA grew a higher desire in fighting for justice and freedom no matter what the reason. Considering Panama nor the Aztecs grew a desire in fighting for freedom/justice, they never had a mindset on improving their military power. As a result, it was easier for countries like the US and Spain to invade them with less effort.
